The CDC

Emory University—the Center for Disease Control building was several stories high and ringed with security. The hospital-like building was an architectural marvel of glass and steel. Several armed guards stood watch at a checkpoint by the only entrance to the fenced perimeter. They were alert and taking no chances. The guards checked every car, carefully scanning the undercarriage with mirrors and running a bomb-sniffing dog back and forth. The animal seemed well trained. One military-looking man with short hair inspected the hood and trunk of everyone’s vehicle that entered. I saw cameras everywhere. This wasn’t going to be easy.

Henrietta had joined one of the tourist groups in line for the underground entrance to the CDC Museum. I looked down on her disguise from the elevated parking garage. The New York baseball cap and fanny pack seemed a flimsy cover. She set off one of the metal detectors and a German shorthaired pointer began growling at her purse. Henrietta merely bent over and began cooing to the dog, exposing her cleavage to the male guard who took a good look and began pulling the canine back.

“Leave off, Rolf. Leave the nice lady alone.”

She flirted her way past security and a second guard who clumsily wanded her down before waving her through. The man’s eyes followed the sway of her hips as she made it inside.

The plan was simple. Henrietta would make her way to the back of the crowded museum where the building was closest to the nearby laboratory of the CDC headquarters. She would use her magic to confuse any guards who might be monitoring the cameras. When it was safe, she would open an employee door so I could enter, disguised as a janitor. The two of us would then make our way calmly through an underground tunnel and up to the level four biosafety containment lab. It would be up to me to use the samples Isabella had provided, along with my own blood to isolate the virus and develop a cure while Henrietta kept everyone else away. This type of research could take months, but I had to pull it off—in what—a few hours?

Attracting the gazes of male and female guards alike with her sashaying curves and magic-enhanced pheromones, Henrietta passed by the various exhibits on genetically altered mosquitos and transmission of communicable diseases. She made small talk with several of the other tourists, blending in and establishing herself as part of the group. Henrietta casually picked up a map of the museum and studied a diagram on the wall of the nearest fire escape route.

No one batted an eye as she split herself in two, the more alluring shadow-version of herself continuing to draw everyone’s eyes as the real Henrietta made it to a fire exit and touched the door. She silenced the alarm with a thought, burning the wires within the door and melting the metal sensors. She opened the door without a sound.

My uniform had allowed me to walk unchallenged outside the building and meet her.
